Our Charter Organization & BSA District/Area Level Affiliation
Pack 465 was chartered by Hickory Flat United Methodist Church in 1987. The church graciously provides us meeting space and other resources in support of our program. While Scouting’s values emphasize a faith in God, Scouting welcomes Families of all denominations and faith backgrounds. For clarity, Scouts and their Families are not required to have affiliation with HFUMC in order to join Pack 465. Based on assignment guidance from our Appalachian Trail District and the Atlanta Area Council, our Pack primarily recruits from Hickory Flat Elementary School “HFES”, but ultimately welcomes Scouts from any elementary school/ homeschool.
Pack Format
Pack 465 is currently a Traditional Pack, meaning we provide Cub Scout programming for boys enrolled in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Packs that provide programming for both boys and girls are called Family Packs. Scouting America requires Family Packs to have adequate membership interest to create gender-specific dens and volunteer leaders to support quality programming for both boys and girls. Formatting of a Pack is determined by the interest in the Pack membership and approved by the charter organization. Our Pack conducted a member survey in the summer of 2020 to determine interest level in transitioning to a “Family Pack” format. Ultimately, while our charter organization expressed consent for the Pack to operate in either format, membership interest remained focused on creating quality programming in our current “Traditional Pack” format rather than dedication to organizational transition. The Pack annually addresses topics/decisions such as this during yearly planning sessions, which generally occurs over the summer. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend the annual planning meeting. Keep in mind that while our Pack formal programming is currently for boys, Scouting is a family activity, where we thrive on parent and sibling participation.
Scouting Mission
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. More specifically, Cub Scouts strives to promote core values such as Citizenship, Compassion, Cooperation, Courage, Faith, Health and Fitness, Honesty, Perseverance, Positive Attitude, Resourcefulness, Respect, and Responsibility.
